Outdoor Dog Kennel from Amazon?

Getting an outdoor dog kennel delivered to your door is a huge convenience. Many of us do not have the vehicle or the strength to haul kennel panels back from a local store and having them delivered is no savings. In fact, many Amazon dog kennels include free shipping.

So, why not buy online and have these bulky items delivered to your doorstep? That’s what I would do.

Now, quite a few options online I will not show you. After many years running kennels large and small, let me alert you to dangers in some outdoor dog kennel panels you’ll see:

  • Door gaps on sides or gaps between panels. Dogs jump against doors and gaps lend themselves to caught paws.
  • Rounded doors with gaps on sides. Those rounded corners can become a conduit to slide the paw down between the panel and the door. This can hang up some dogs.
  • Gaps at the bottom of the door. This invites escape attempts.
  • Hinges that are simply drop onto a peg. If your dog pushes the door up that door can come unhinged.

Look for well-made panels that fit together well with a door that fits into the doorway well with secure hinges and a dog-proof lock. The gappy ones may be less expensive initially but a single injury needing veterinary care will eat up any savings.

If I were buying, I’d be looking at Kennel Pro. They have a wide range of welded panels (option: with a canopy top), corrugated metal tops (sold separately) and raised flooring. They also have a digging prevention set up which is unique and an excellent idea if you have a dog who digs toward freedom. You can also purchase what they call “anti-fight” panels which are solid barriers that attach to the panels so two dogs can’t see each other or pet owners could use those to block harsh sun or a view that starts their dog barking. For more complete blocing of sun, rain or wind, check out their Yard Kennel Panel Cover.

For smaller dogs, look at BestPet® Black 40″ Heavy Duty Pet Playpen Dog Exercise Pen Cat Fence B (All Sizes from 24″ to 40″ tall). These can be configured in a variety of ways and you can combine two or more playpens if you want a larger area. For toy breeds outside, I use bird netting (at the very least) above the pen to prevent hawks and owls from taking your companion.

Outdoor dog kennelSo can you buy an outdoor dog kennel on Amazon and have it delivered right to your dog, no fuss, no muss? Yes, yes you can.

Summer Dog Water Bowl Options

Outdoor Dog Water BowlDogs need water everyday. In the summer, dogs need access to clean water anytime they are outside. An indoor dog water bowl isn’t going to cut it. They are usually too small or too easily tipped over or too breakable to hold this precious resource.

Here are a few dog watering options. Please keep these in a shaded part of your yard. An empty silver bowl started a fire a few years back. A random event but still, shade is best.

non tip dog water bowl
Durapet Non-Tip Bowl, Extra Large
This is Pip’s current outside dog water bowl. It is much larger than her indoor one as I do not ever want her to run out. She loves to bake in the sun and I let her when I am home. This sort of non-tip bowl works well for many dogs. I dump it nightly on the last walk of the day, refilling it in the morning. This prevents mosquitoes from breeding in it and from wildlife being attracted by it in dry spells.

Stain steel dog bucket
Advance Pet Products Heavy Stainless Steel Flat Side Bucket, 4-Quart
When I ran large kennels, I used a lot of stainless, flat-backed buckets with inward turned handles with great success. They hold a great deal of water, are easy to clean, long wearing and, when clipped to a fence with a carabiner do not tip over.

ant free water bowl
Ant Free Pet Bowls 2 Pack for $ 31.90
If red ants or fire ants are a risk, try an ant-proof bowl.

Lixit dog waterer
Lixit Original Dog Faucet Waterer
Silver Lixit Outside Faucet Dog Waterer

These Lixit products screw on to a outdoor faucet giving your dog a steady supply to clean water, once they know how to use it. Nothing to dump or clean or worry about. Sweet!

I’d never use a faucet that gets southern direct sun as it might get too hot for the dog to lick. This product has been around for a looong time because it works well and dogs use it happily.

Plastic Dog Houses

Plastic Dog HousesPlastic dog houses are many pluses: easy to clean, less attractive to chew for many dogs, less attractive to bugs and, in many cases, darn easy to assemble. The main downside is potential skin ick from lying on damp plastic so good bedding is key if you’re in a damp area/season.

The large doors these sport without truly secure closure means you need to spray your dog so bugs don’t harass him and that such a house cannot be cozy in the winter. Houses with good ventilation and an insulated roof will be cooler in the summer.

Pet Zone Dog House
Pet Zone Tuff-N-Rugged Dog House
This is an easy-to-assemble, insulated plastic dog house with adjustable vents making it a good option for summer housing. Here’s a Smaller Size.

Outside dog house
Outside Dog House – Plastic Dog House MGH-1 Green
Outside Dog House – Plastic Dog House LGH-1 Rose Red
If you want a charming dog house in your yard, this will fit the bill. If you want serious housing for your dog, this would not be my choice. The company mentions that you can put sand in the flooring so weight it down so that makes me thinks it is prone to tipping. No ventilation is mentioned anywhere and… I am not fan of small dogs left outside in most situations. They are too vulnerable to coyote, hawks and owls.

Petmate barn
PETMATE 290708 Barn Home III for Medium Pets
Petmate offers this light-weight, easy-to-assemble dog shelter. Write ups mention rear ventilation. I like the slight overhang in front. All sizes of the PetMate Barn

PetEdge Dog Deck
PetEdge Molded Plastic Dog Kennel Deck, 8-1/2-Pound
I include this here as a porch option, if you should want one. If your dog is like Pip, they likes to bake in the sun. The deck allows your dog to do that easily.

Dog House with Porch

Many dogs love lounging on a raised area surveying their domain and catching a summer breeze and a nice dog house with porch is a fine spot to do that from. A porch also keeps your dog out of the mud in wet weather, should he need to be outside.

Here are a few popular houses with porches and a couple of porches you can purchase separately to add later.

If you keep your dog outside in the summer, you need to provide constant supply of clean water, plenty of shade, relief from insects and protection from parasites of all kinds. Taking care of all your dogs needs will allow him to enjoy his porch to the fullest.

Here are a few of the Amazon options:

3 Winter Watering Tips

Watering TipsDogs need to drink in the winter but getting the needed water into outside dogs can be tricky in below-freezing weather. Water needs vary widely depending on weather, what your dog eats, his size, coat length, weight, exercise level and more. The best person to assess your dogs exact needs is his veterinarian. But, regardless of the exact number of ounces needed a day, here are three winter watering tips to help you keep your friend hydrated during the cold weather if he must be outside:

Add Water
Adding warm water to your dog’s meal ups his water intake and is warming. Think “soupy” and you’ll be on the right track. “Warm” means barely warm to us; not remotely “hot”. Feed them the temp you would feed an infant.

Soup Up His Water
Adding yummy things to his water can increase drinking when the “soup” is put out upping his intake before freezing happens. Mixing in some wet dog food or low sodium chicken/beef broth can tempt a dog to drink.

Electric Warmth
Bowls that have electric heaters built in can be a great option for dogs beyond the puppy stage. If you use a heated water bowl, you’ll need a Farm Innovators CC-2 Cord Connect Water-Tight Cord Lock – Green. I used these at my farms and they work well making winter extension cord use safe and reliable.

5 Features of a Great Insulated Dog House

Insulated dog house

This is a well-designed, well-made insulated dog house with all the features listed here.

Housing a dog* outside in the winter requires the best weather-proof, insulated dog house be used, with the right winter bedding. What makes a dog house a good winter option? Look for the following features:

Raised Door
When the door is raised up that allows the dog to curl up below drafts, allows the heat to build up in the bedding without it being sucked out the doorway and it helps hold the bedding in the house. Look for a raised dog in any insulated dog house you buy.

Small Door
The smaller the door, the less heat escapes so your dog should have to lower his head to enter and exit. The tighter the squeeze the snugger the house.

Raised Floor
A raised floor—ideally both insulated and with a drain— keeps the heat the dog gives off from being lost to the cold of an uninsulated floor or the wet of a floor with no drain.

Tight Space
Since every square inch counts when it comes to heating their home, a insulated dog house should be smaller rather than larger. A lowish or rounded roof can be an asset as well. Your dog should be able to stand up, turn around and curl up comfortably but, ideally, not sprawl out.

Well-Fitted, Solid Door
If you wouldn’t use a sheet of plastic as a winter door, don’t ask your dog to do so. You want a well-fitted door that does not let rain or snow in, closes completely and, in a perfect world is insulated, too.

 * Some dogs are not made for outside living. Small dogs, thin dogs, dogs with thin fur, puppies, old dogs, sick dogs all must be inside year around. Please talk to your dog’s veterinarian about whether your dog can be safely and properly cared for outside. Dogs get cold and can get frost-bite just like we can.

4 Signs Your Dog Is Cold!

Signs Your Dog is ColdKnowing when your dog is cold is key to keeping them comfy and healthy in the winter months. Here are four signs your dog is cold:

  • Hunched and Bunched
Like us, when dogs are trying to conserve body heat they scrunch up their bodies. They pull their head down, their tail under and they arch their backs. “Miserable” is the caption. Get them inside where it is warm immediately!
  • Shaking
Like us, dogs tremble and shiver in an effort to get warmer. Some small dogs tremble when nervous as well, so know your dog. But if your dog doesn’t normally shake and he is shaking and it’s cold? Assume he IS cold. When in doubt, assume he is cold.
  • Lifting One Paw Then Another
Cold dogs stand on three feet then shift to lift another paw off the ground. This can also be a sign that salt is stinging their feet. Either way, they are uncomfortable.
  • Doesn’t Stretch
Because they are trying to conserve body heat, they don’t stretch when they get up sleeping or come out of a dog house.

It is 100% up to us to keep our dogs safe and comfortable year round. If your dog must stay outside in cold weather than get them an insulated dog house that is up to the task! Do not rely on dog coats or sweaters for outside dogs as they can slip off or get wet. Both are fine for outside walks and indoor comfort.

Thank you for reading and caring about the signs your dog is cold.  If you have questions, ask below.

Best Winter Dog House Bedding

Proper winter dog house bedding makes the difference between a warm, comfortable dog in the winter months or a cold, stressed, miserable dog. I am so glad you are reading up on behalf of your dog.
Border Collie in a kennel against white background

Here are options:

  • Fabric
No. Bad idea. It will get wet and when it gets wet it won’t be warm or it may freeze solid. Either way, not warm or cozy.
  • Shavings
Many people use these and dogs can make a shallow nest but they can’t truly burrow in.  Can be enough for a heavily-coated dog in a mild winter region. Some dogs can be allergic to cedar shavings. Not an ideal choice for really cold regions though some people lay some on the bottom of the dog house to catch moisture.
  • Pine Straw
    Much like shavings.
  • Straw
The tried-and-true bedding for cold areas. Shake the straw out and fill the dog house full with it. This allows your dog to burrow into it making a cozy straw den for himself. Straw is available at most garden and/or farm supply stores. Change it every couple of weeks, more if it is really wet out. Keep it fluffed up and add more when it gets compressed.

Now, observe your dog. If he comes out of his house, stretches and stands head up, tail wagging then he is a happy dog. If he comes out of his house hunched over, head down, trembling then he is cold and he needs a warmer house
or deeper/better bedding.
